September, 1939

Now is the hour of the
the baby as if
in response to some
tidal thing all the
babies in the store
begin to wail
almost Biblical
lamentations
simultaneously or
maybe it's the
domino theory one
begins a split
second before ano-
ther thus illus-
trating (almost) the
simultaneity of
cause and effect.
All the mothers
frown and bite
their lower lips
head for checkouts
fast the babies
scream and
howl like the
engines of
automotive
wrecks as their
tiny stomachs
growl their
eyes overflow
and their complexions
grow red with
fury. It pays
to be intense, I
guess the squeaky
wheel gets greased
and all
but aren't babies
monsters? Their
blubbery faces their
fanatic clenched
fists they remind
me of some
politicians  the likes
of which we may
hope to never
see again.
